Sean Sprague is a Canadian artist based in the United States whose practice is grounded in the space photography occupies between the real and the constructed. Working through the large-scale photographic tableau, he examines how photography — given its simultaneous hold on fabrication and trace — can serve as a site for questioning how truth is defined and represented. He situates his practice within a lineage of the 'painting of modern life' approached through photography. His work has been exhibited across North America and featured in publications including The New Yorker and Time. His practice has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Wenner-Gren Foundation, among others. Sprague studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design and received his MFA from the University of California Los Angeles. He is a lecturer at the University of California San Diego and the University of California Los Angeles.
